Marius Sulla: The 1st Civil War 91-70 BC tells the story of two of Rome's most famous generals, Gaius Marius and Lucius Cornelius Sulla, and their rivalry that led to the first civil war in Roman history.
Marius was a self-made man who rose from humble beginnings to become one of Rome's most successful generals. He was a brilliant military strategist and a charismatic leader, and he was idolized by the Roman people. Sulla, on the other hand, was a member of the Roman aristocracy who was born into wealth and privilege. He was a ruthless and ambitious politician, and he was determined to become the master of Rome.
The rivalry between Marius and Sulla began in the late 2nd century BC, when both men were serving as generals in the Roman army. Marius was the more successful general, and he quickly became the favorite of the Roman people. Sulla, however, was jealous of Marius's success, and he began to plot against him.
In 91 BC, Sulla was elected consul of Rome. He used his new position to launch a series of attacks on Marius and his supporters. Marius was forced to flee Rome, and Sulla became the undisputed master of the city.
Marius eventually returned to Rome with an army, and the two sides fought a bloody civil war. The war lasted for several years, and it resulted in the deaths of thousands of Romans. In the end, Sulla emerged victorious, and he became the dictator of Rome.
Sulla's dictatorship was a time of terror and bloodshed. He proscribed thousands of his enemies, and he had many of them executed. He also confiscated the property of his enemies and distributed it to his supporters.
Sulla's dictatorship lasted for two years, and he abdicated in 79 BC. He died shortly thereafter, and the Roman Republic was restored.
Marius Sulla: The 1st Civil War 91-70 BC is a fascinating and tragic story of ambition, rivalry, and violence. It is a story that sheds light on the dark side of human nature, and it is a reminder of the fragility of the Roman Republic.
