Occupational therapy is a relatively young profession, with its roots in the late 19th century. However, its origins can be traced back to much earlier times, when people with disabilities were often treated with rest and isolation.

The first occupational therapy school was founded in 1912 at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. The school was founded by Eleanor Clarke Slagle, a nurse who had worked with disabled soldiers during the Civil War. Slagle believed that occupation could be used to help people with disabilities regain their independence and improve their quality of life.

Occupational therapy quickly spread to other hospitals and rehabilitation centers, and by the early 20th century, it was recognized as a distinct profession. In 1917, the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) was founded to promote the profession and establish standards for education and practice.

The first half of the 20th century saw a rapid growth in the field of occupational therapy. New techniques and approaches were developed, and the profession expanded to new areas of practice, such as pediatrics, geriatrics, and mental health.

In the second half of the 20th century, occupational therapy continued to grow and develop. The profession became more research-based, and new technologies were introduced to help occupational therapists provide more effective care.

Today, occupational therapy is a well-established profession that is practiced in a variety of settings, including hospitals, rehabilitation centers, schools, and community agencies. Occupational therapists work with people of all ages and abilities to help them achieve their goals and improve their quality of life.

The History of Occupational Therapy: The First Century

The History of Occupational Therapy: The First Century is a comprehensive overview of the development of occupational therapy from its origins in the late 19th century to its current status as a recognized profession.

This book is written by two occupational therapists with over 50 years of combined experience in the field. The authors have drawn on their own experiences, as well as extensive research, to create a detailed and engaging account of the history of occupational therapy.

The book is divided into three parts. Part One provides an overview of the origins of occupational therapy and its development in the early 20th century. Part Two focuses on the growth and expansion of the profession in the mid-20th century. Part Three examines the current status of occupational therapy and its future prospects.

The History of Occupational Therapy: The First Century is a valuable resource for occupational therapists, educators, and researchers. It is also an excellent read for anyone who is interested in the history of healthcare and rehabilitation.
